Bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) is a critical tool in forensic science, providing valuable insights into the events of a crime scene. By examining the shape, size, distribution, and location of bloodstains, forensic experts can piece together what likely occurred during a violent incident, helping investigators understand aspects like the weapon used, the number of blows or shots, and the positions of people involved.

One of the primary contributions of BPA is determining the type of force used. Different mechanisms of blood dispersion, such as blunt force trauma or gunshot wounds, create distinctive patterns. For instance, gunshot wounds often produce a fine mist of tiny droplets, known as high-velocity spatter, while blunt force impacts lead to larger, more erratic droplets. Analysts can also evaluate the directionality of blood droplets. The shape of a stain—elongated or rounded—indicates the direction in which the blood traveled before hitting a surface, revealing the possible location of the victim and the assailant.
Bloodstains can also suggest movement within the crime scene. A trail of blood drops moving across a floor, for example, may indicate that a victim moved after being injured, potentially leading investigators to more evidence, such as discarded weapons or DNA. Additionally, examining voids—areas where blood is absent due to an obstruction—can help identify if an object or person was present during the incident but later moved.
In some cases, BPA can even shed light on the timeline of the events. Blood dries and coagulates at a specific rate, so analyzing the characteristics of stains can sometimes help experts estimate when an incident occurred.
